Activities

UNEP Shelf Programme

The UNEP Shelf Programme is coordinated by UNEP/GRID-Arendal in Norway and is established to assist developing States and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to complete the activities required to delineate the outer limits of their continental shelf. States are faced with the costly and complex work of data identification, collection, analysis and submission preparation. Due to limited technical and financial capacity many developing States and SIDS will not be able to complete the submission process without considerable external support, both technical and financial. This support is offered by The UNEP Shelf Programme.

Marine and Coastal Sustainable Development

The goals of the project are:

1. To support UNEP in promoting sustainable use and ecosystem-based management of oceans through policy and programme development and in the delivery of environmental knowledge, tools and methodologies.

2. To assist in the development of the the UN regular process on marine assessment and a methodology for environmental assessment of transboundary waters

3. To assist UNEP in developing its climate change adaptation programme through capacity building on integrated planning and preparedness to sea level rise and reviewing ocean acidification impacts and implications of CO2 sequestration in deep geological reservoirs.

Capacity Building in Oceans and Coastal Management

The project aims to promote management of coastal and marine resources for both conservation and sustainable development through building capacity within coastal states in order to integrate the marine environment into national development planning. The project also provides support to international organizations with environmental knowledge leading to sustainable management of marine resources in areas beyond national jurisdiction.
