Forest plays a major role in ecosystem services yet it has a high market value. Deforestation, estimated at about 13 millions hectares – an area little bit more than Bulgaria – each year, has immediate consequences in terms of release of carbon emissions and loss of biodiversity. To serve various decision-making cycles, three United Nations organizations, the UN Environment Programme, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization and the UN Forum on Forests, combined forces to make a highly visual publication, Vital Forest Graphics, that identifies consensus by sorting out what is known and widely accepted from what is not known or not agreed. Vital Forest Graphics summarizes the complexity of deforestation and forest degradation and illustrates major forest services and root causes behind them. (Fall 2008)
